Siding Replacement in Vermont: Materials, Climate & What Pro-Tech Includes
Pro-Tech Contracting installs and replaces siding on homes and commercial buildings throughout Burlington, Vermont and surrounding counties. Vermont's climate — cold winters, freeze-thaw cycling, and wet shoulder seasons — demands siding products that resist moisture infiltration, impact from ice and debris, and temperature extremes. Pro-Tech installs vinyl siding, fiber cement siding (including James Hardie products with a 30-year manufacturer warranty), and traditional wood clapboard depending on the homeowner's budget, maintenance preference, and aesthetic goals. Every siding project begins with a free inspection to assess the existing condition, identify any rotted sheathing or failed house wrap beneath the current siding, and determine whether repair or full replacement is the right recommendation.
Proper siding installation includes more than the visible panels. House wrap replacement where damaged, correct flashing at all windows, doors, and penetrations, and proper corner board and trim integration are all critical to preventing moisture infiltration behind the new siding. Pro-Tech does not skip these steps to reduce cost. Cutting installation corners is the primary cause of moisture damage inside Vermont walls — a problem that is far more expensive to repair than the cost of doing the installation correctly the first time. All siding work comes with a 2-year labor warranty on all work performed.

Siding Questions & Answers

Which siding material is best for Vermont homes?
Fiber cement siding, particularly James Hardie products, performs best in Vermont's climate. It is moisture-resistant, will not rot or warp through freeze-thaw cycles, is fire-resistant, and carries a 30-year manufacturer warranty. Vinyl siding is the most popular budget option — low maintenance and rated 20–40 years when properly installed. Wood clapboard is the traditional Vermont look and can last 30+ years with regular painting every 5–7 years. The right choice depends on your maintenance tolerance, budget, and aesthetic preference. Pro-Tech installs all three and will give an honest recommendation based on your specific home and situation.
Does James Hardie siding require maintenance?
James Hardie fiber cement siding comes factory-primed or pre-finished (HardiePanel, HardiePlank, etc.). Pre-finished products carry ColorPlus technology with a 15-year finish warranty. The underlying fiber cement itself carries a 30-year warranty against defects. Unlike wood siding, fiber cement will not rot, warp, or crack under normal conditions. The primary maintenance required is periodic painting when the finish begins to fade — typically every 10–15 years for pre-finished products. The underlying material itself does not require sealing or staining. Pro-Tech installs and paints James Hardie products throughout Vermont.
How long does siding replacement take?
A full siding replacement on a standard Vermont cape or colonial home typically takes 3–7 days. This includes removing the old siding, inspecting and replacing any damaged sheathing or house wrap, installing the new siding, and completing all trim and corner work. Larger homes or homes with complex profiles — multiple gables, many window penetrations, or significant woodwork details — take longer. Pro-Tech provides a written timeline with every siding estimate.
Can you match new siding to my existing siding for a partial replacement?
Matching existing siding for partial replacement is possible in many cases but has limitations. Vinyl siding colors and profiles are subject to manufacturer discontinuation, so matching older vinyl can sometimes be difficult. Fiber cement and wood siding can typically be matched more closely since they are paintable. Pro-Tech will assess the match feasibility during the free inspection and will be honest about whether the match will be noticeable. In cases where an exact match is not achievable, we discuss options for updating the entire affected elevation to avoid a patchwork appearance.
